Zen Horse VI

"And here we stand while life rushes past
Between the first breath and the last
And here we stand between East and West
And here we stand between birth and death"

                     - David Francey, Saints and Sinners

Note: This piece cracked during the extreme temperature changes of firing. The crack has been repaired and highlighted with a cold finish.

Title: Zen Horse VI
Medium: Raku fired ceramic clay
Size: 6.5(H) x 8.5(L) in

What is raku? Glowing red hot clay pieces are taken from the kiln and placed in a material that catches fire, such as sawdust. They are then enclosed in a container with the flames. The lack of oxygen gives the glazes striking colors and patterns. Areas with no glaze take oxygen from the clay itself, leaving them with a beautiful matte black colour.
