The book was perfect as a lesson plan for my homeschooled grandchildren. I teach art to four of them, ages 5 through 16. This is our first venture into sculpture. We have been sculpting a dog for the last few weeks. The photo illustrations are great for showing them step by step what to do next. We all wish we could sculpt like Susie!
I purchased both books and am very impressed with the amount of information. Susie provides tips, troubleshooting, and a lot of information with pictures. I think one of the things I really liked the most in these books were the proportional measuring guides so you can take your sculpture poses beyond the template guides. I am familiar with wire twisting, so the pictures made sense to me. However, for someone struggling to twist the wires, consider wrapping the middle of your wire length around something solid and stable, like a metal table leg or a screw shank sticking out of a piece of wood (get creative here). Then twist the wires around each other tightly (roughly 6-8 wraps per inch is safety-wire standard) and trim to length. If you use an anchor like this, it's much easier to get evenly spaced twists throughout the length of your wire. Hope it helps someone.
Susie, thank you for sharing your art and knowledge. You have made armature building very clear to understand. I have recently began animal sculpting again, having basically only craved out of a block of clay. My time consuming search for how to build an armature resulted in many vague or too complicated, maybe a step in the process missing or amateurish looking stick figures. Your book has given me the insight to return to sculpting in a new way with armatures and air dry clay and a strong foundation in how to achieve this . Thanks ! Sandra
I found this book a really great introduction to creating clay animals. The book isn't very long but covers everything you need to know to create a piece from start to finish. I definitely recommend
I am new to sculpting and found this ebook to be a great introduction, especially the instructions about creating an armature. It was the best guide I found online.
Purchased as a birthday gift for my partner, the diagrams are extremely helpful and the book overall is full of great tips for sculpting. Would definitely recommend!
I found the guide very easy to understand and gives great results. Thank you so much
Was thinking about some wire work projects I've been planning to make, if I can figure out how to do it; most are animals with a wire armature. This looks ideal for my purposes. I'm sure I won't be able to make anything as beautiful and intricate as the projects in the booklet, but it's a good place to start. Such gorgeous artwork!
I've always dabbled in sculpting in clay. I'm self taught and never had the opportunity to take real art classes in sculpting. So this will be a great addition to helping me on my journey.
Susie's work is absolutely gorgeous and inspiring, and she shares so much information on her website the least one can do is buy the book! I'm pleased I did too, very encouraging - just got to get started now.
I expected to be a bit thicker. It’s not very clear in some pictures on how to join wires together. I was still left struggling to know what to do.
Very clear, concise little booklet all the info one could need. Very pleased with it.
